Job Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Project Manager or a designate, the Assistant Project Manager oversees management and execution of various contracts related to the Track, Signals and Communications, Infrastructure and Right-of-Way activities within Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Working closely with the technical experts and qualified on-site personnel, Assistant Project Manager will manage all aspects of the contract administration, including fulfilling project requirements, promoting safety culture, conducting quality control and assurance, providing internal reports to the management team, and other tasks as assigned by the Project Manager or a designate. Ideal candidate will possess significant knowledge of the project management activities related to heavy construction and transportation, and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Duties and Responsibilities:*
  1. Assesses and/or prepares scope of work required to successfully fulfill contract requirements.

  2. Prepares and verifies budget and revenue estimates based on the scope of work and specifications.

  3. Develops and monitors project schedules, including but not limited to critical path calculation, resource allocation and delay analysis.

  4. Prepares and verifies work plans and methodologies, including but not limited to obtaining necessary permits, organizing resources, developing logistics and coordinating tasks between different stakeholders.

  5. Manages project activities based on the budgetary and contract requirements.

  6. Assists in procuring material, equipment and services, and organizing required training for the reporting personnel.

  7. Prepares and submits supporting reports and documents as per the project requirements responsibilities.

  8. Attends internal meetings, meetings with the clients and other stakeholders.

  9. Monitors and evaluates performance of on-site employees and subcontractors.

  10. Develops all required documentation for the submission of project related invoices.

  11. Investigates and reports all issues arising during all stages of project.

  12. Prepares and submits RFIs, change order requests and other respective documentation related to the contract change management.

  13. Prepares and analyses cost, budget, production and other reports as requested by the management team.

  14. Monitors and provides guidance to project coordinators and other staff.

  15. Actively engages and promotes safety culture. Ensures that safety and quality control standards are followed at all times.

  16. Performs other related administrative or project based duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in a related field of study such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Contract Management or Project Management.

  • Minimum 2 years of related project or contract management experience in heavy construction or railroad environment.* *

  • Proficiency with common business and construction software such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, Hard Dollar, or JD Edwards.

  • Previous supervisory or management position is a strong asset.

  • PEng designation or equivalent is an asset.

  • PMP designation or equivalent is an asset.

  • Demonstrated project management experience in project accounting, project controls (cost, schedule, change management, etc.), procurement, contract administration, safety, and quality control.

Physical/Travel/Attendance Requirements

  • This is full-time office position.

  • Occasional weekend or night work may be required.

  • Occasional exposure to outdoor construction sites in all weather conditions may be required.

  • Majority of the field work is on and around live track (trains).

  • Work may be in urban, rural or isolated areas. Accommodations and transportation will be provided, if required.
